Educator Open House: Educating for the Future

Join us as we celebrate, uplift, and inspire our network of educators through a special Educator Open House event for Black History Month. Teachers, administrators, and school faculty receive free admission and exclusive access to the Museum, with programs and resources highlighting curricular connections to the Museum’s exhibitions, including our newest installation Imagined Futures. Activities include tours of Imagined Futures exploring the origins and significance of Afrofuturism, a demonstration of NLM’s Heroes from Comics to Reality field trip focusing on Black comics and heroes, classroom resources, and community art-making.
Free for all teachers, administrators, school faculty, and educators, advanced registration is encouraged.

BLACK HISTORY IN THE CLASSROOM WORKSHOP WITH ISMAEL JIMENEZ | 4:30 PM
Join Ismael Jimenez, Director of Social Studies curriculum for the School District of Philadelphia, for a workshop and discussion on incorporating Black history into your classroom and teaching outside the textbook.
Ismael Jimenez is a dedicated educator, who for the last seventeen years has worked with students in Philadelphia from preschool age to high school. For over a decade, Ismael has led several professional development sessions around social studies content for social studies instructors teaching middle school to the high school level across the city of Philadelphia and the nation. Along with being a dedicated educator in the School District of Philadelphia, Ismael has facilitated several professional developments at postsecondary institutions like the University of Pennsylvania, Penn State University and Princeton University on issues ranging from structural racism to bridging the knowledge/ skill gap of students between high school and postsecondary institutions.
Currently, Ismael is the Director of Social Studies curriculum for the School District of Philadelphia and an adjunct professor for the University of Pennsylvania’s Urban Teacher Apprentice Program (UTAP). The philosophical orientation that guides Ismael’s teaching and activism is rooted in the theoretical educational framework developed by Paulo Freire which emphasizes the interconnected nature of education with participating in the transformation of the world.
HEROES FROM COMICS TO REALITY FIELD TRIP DEMONSTRATION | 5:15 PM
Experience an abbreviated version of the NLM’s field trip Heroes from Comics to Reality, with a focus on the Black heroes highlighted in the program. A Museum Educator will showcase the stories of real-life heroes in our Heroes of Liberty From Around the World gallery and demonstrate the interactive workshop where students create their own hero who stands up for social issues that are important to them.
RESOURCES FROM PA EDUCATOR DIVERSITY CONSORTIUM | ONGOING, 6:15 PM info session
The Pennsylvania Educator Diversity Consortium is a grassroots organization of early childhood, PK-12, higher education, non-profit, community, and government invested partners striving to increase the number of teachers of color, specifically those who identify as Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color, and culturally relevant and sustaining educators in Pennsylvania. There are over 380 individuals, many of whom represent nearly 200 organizations across the Commonwealth, committed to PEDC’s vision of a future in which each learner in Pennsylvania experiences racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse and culturally relevant and sustaining educators leading their classrooms and educational institutions.
PEDC is eager to collaborate with educators in the Philadelphia region to promote best practices and advocate for the conditions necessary to attract, recruit, support, and retain teachers of color for Pennsylvania’s classrooms as well as to develop culturally relevant and sustaining educators for all learners.
Visit PEDC representatives at their table or attend their information session to learn more about PEDC membership (it’s free!), monthly statewide network meetings, regions and working groups, policy and advocacy efforts, and FREE, virtual, open-to-all, ACT 48-credit eligible Educator Diversity Summit to be held June 20th-22nd focused on these issues.
IMAGINED FUTURES AFROFUTURISM POP-UP DISCUSSIONS | ONGOING
Museum Educators will be holding 10-minute pop-up discussions in the newly opened Imagined Futures, demonstrating visual thinking strategies that can be used to explore the themes and details of artwork. The discussions will focus on works in the exhibition that contain elements of Afrofuturism – the intersection of African diaspora culture with science and technology.
COMMUNITY CRAFTING SAND ART ACTIVITY | ONGOING
Converse and create with fellow educators as you channel your creativity into sand painting, a calming, imaginative art-making activity inspired by Imagined Futures artwork by Chau Nguyen.
