NLM at Night: It is Better to Speak – A Women’s History StorySlam

NLM commemorates Women’s History Month with an evening dedicated to women’s stories, told from perspectives as varied as the experiences that fuel them. First Person Arts brings their unique storytelling space into NLM’s Liberty Hall for this special storyslam. Hear from seasoned storytellers as they weave through the heartwarming, the hilarious, the powerful, and the thought-provoking. Everyone has a story to tell, so add your name to the mix for a chance to be featured as part of an open mic session.

Storytellers:

Jamie J. Brunson has brought storytelling to the stage within different spheres of the arts and cultural community for over 16 years. She served as managing director of New Freedom Theatre and the Providence Black Repertory Company and as Director of Institutional Gifts and Sponsorship for the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. An accomplished playwright, Brunson is a four-time Delaware Division of the Arts/NEA grantee for playwriting and an award-winning playwright who was named a “New Voice in American Theatre” by the Edward Albee Theatre Conference. Her plays have been produced across the country at the Wilmington Fringe Festival (DE); the Kitchen Theatre; New Freedom Theatre; the Harlem Theatre Company, Abingdon Theatre (NYC); Walnut Street Theatre Second Stage (Philadelphia); Karamu House (Cleveland, OH); and Providence Black Repertory Company (RI). Her playwriting awards and honors include a Panelist Choice Award at the Edward Albee Conference and selection as a Chesterfield Film Company Fellowship Semi-Finalist. Brunson holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre from Sarah Lawrence College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio-Television-Film from Temple University.

Art Chandrasekaran is a newcomer to the Philadelphia Storytelling scene. She was a nationally ranked collegiate Forensics coach at multiple midwestern universities, taught the storytelling course at The Planet Ant improv comedy theater, and earned a scholarship to attend the Second City. Art now works as an executive public speaking expert and change management consultant. With over a decade of public speaking experience, she mixes classical training and her life experiences to develop deeply personal narratives.

Sara Ray has been telling stories with First Person Arts since 2015 and was crowned Philadelphia’s Best Storyteller in 2017. In addition to telling stories on stage, Sara is a member of Philly’s Backyard Writers Workshop and has had short fiction published in a smattering of literary journals.
