Superhero media inspired by Marvel’s Black Panther, DC’s Cyborg, and a vibrant scene of independent creators put forth powerful visions of futuristic heroes shaped by Black identity. In honor of Black History Month and inspired by our forward-looking exhibition Imagined Futures, NLM teams up with the East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention (ECBACC) for a day of all-ages programming highlighting glimpses of the future that bring out the hero in all of us.
This spectacular day of creativity, fantasy and conversation will include a panel discussion, a comic book mini-marketplace and youth / adult workshops. Visitors can explore the stories of iconic Black superheroes and comic creators and use these stories as the basis of their new heroes. Those looking for a deeper dive can hear from artists about themes highlighted in comics and sci-fi, and other speculative genres. If you like, come donning your best Black Superhero and Wakandan-inspired costumes for photos, meet-n-greets, and fun!
Meet inspiring artists and authors who create their own worlds in pages and in reality: Shawn Alleyne, Founder of Pyroglyphics Studio / The Xion Network; Aaron Beatty, Founder of The Heruary Initiative – Black Superhero Prompts List; Dylan Bolden, Creator of Dylandoodles Art and Illustration; Akinşeye Brown, Founder of Sokoya Comics and Author of How To Draw African Superheroes; Roxanne Whitney, Fashion Model and Cosplayer Extraordinaire; and Yumy Odom, Educator / Scholar and Founder of First World Komix and ECBACC, Inc.
